Infographic warning about choosing non-BACB-compliant RBT training and the risk of restarting the process

In 2025, 1 in 31 children in the United States will have autism (CDC report).

As a result, the number of Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) is increasing rapidly.

There are over 206,000 active RBTs in 2025, compared to just 16,000 ten years ago.

This means great job opportunities for you. But here’s a warning…

Picking the wrong 40-hour RBT training program can stop you from getting certified.

People often find a cheap online RBT training course, complete all 40 hours, and then discover their certificate isn’t BACB-compliant. Back to square one.

You don’t want that headache, and that’s why we’ve created this Registered Behavior Technician training guide.

In this blog, you’ll discover exactly which 40-hour RBT training providers meet 2026 BACB requirements, how to verify legitimate courses, and insider tips that help you pass the RBT exam on your first attempt.

Additionally, we’ll break down the real cost differences between various online RBT training options—some options start at just $29, while others charge $250 or more for identical content.

Let’s dive in.

40-Hour RBT Training Requirement Overview

To qualify for RBT certification under the 2026 BACB requirements, applicants must complete a 40-hour RBT training program that meets the following standards:

1. Curriculum Content

Training must follow the RBT Task List (2nd ed.) and prepare trainees for real-world ABA work under the supervision of a BCBA or BCaBA.

  • A minimum of 38 hours must cover core content.
  • Up to 2 hours may be used for flexible reinforcement.
  • Topics can be taught in any order as long as they’re relevant.

2. Timing & Duration

The 40-hour RBT training must be completed within a specific time frame:

  • Minimum: 5 calendar days
  • Maximum: 180 days
  • Note: Reading assignments do not count toward the 40-hour total.

3. Delivery Format

You can choose 40-hour RBT training online, in-person, or hybrid, but you must use active learning such as:

  • Role-playing with feedback
  • Interactive discussions
  • Quizzes and video modeling
    • Reading alone does not qualify.

To boost your confidence and ensure you’re prepared for the actual RBT exam, take practice quizzes based on the RBT 2.0 Task List.

4. Trainer Qualifications

  • Must be overseen by a BCaBA, BCBA, or BCBA-D who has completed 8-hour supervision training.
  • Assistant Trainers (RBT or higher) may help but must not be related to, employed by, or supervised by the trainee.
  • The Responsible Trainer must:
    • Oversee and document all training.
    • Be listed on all records.
    • Retain training documents for 7 years.

5. Provider & Jurisdiction

Only individuals or organizations operating within the BACB jurisdiction are authorized to offer this training.

Training provided outside this jurisdiction will not be accepted. Refer to the RBT Handbook for the list of approved regions.

6. Audit & Compliance

BACB may audit any registered behavior technician training to verify compliance with timing, methods, trainer qualifications, and documentation.

RBT Documentation Requirements

The Responsible Trainer must retain for 7 years:

  • Time logs and learning objectives
  • Participation records
  • Assessments, quiz results, and feedback notes
  • Final certificates

If non-compliance is found, the Responsible Trainer may be required to complete a Non-Compliance Affidavit explaining the issue and the corrective actions taken. Serious noncompliance may result in delayed certification of trainees or disciplinary action.

Accredited Training Providers

The market offers many 40-hour RBT training providers, including online self-paced, live online, and in-person formats. The BACB does not formally accredit courses, but all must meet specific content and delivery requirements. Popular options for RBT training online include:

Online vs. In-Person RBT Training Options

Choosing between 40-hour RBT training online or in-person depends on your learning style and logistics:

Option 1: RBT Training Online

The online format offers flexibility, allowing you to complete coursework at your own pace.

  • Pros: Flexibility to study anytime, accessible from anywhere, and often more affordable.
  • Cons: Requires self-discipline, less real-time interaction, and limited hands-on practice.

In the section above, we’ve listed several online training providers. Visit their websites and select the option that best suits your needs.

Option 2: In-Person RBT Training:

This training takes place in a traditional classroom setting (e.g., school, college, or a dedicated training center.)

  • Pros: Structured schedule, immediate instructor feedback, practical hands-on exercises.
  • Cons: Less flexible timing, location-dependent, potentially higher costs.

For those who prefer structured environments and face-to-face learning, In-person training might be the best choice.

Search “RBT training near me” on Google, and you’ll find a bunch of different colleges, universities, or organizations.

How To Verify RBT Course Accreditation

Before committing to any 40-hour RBT training online or in-person, it’s critical to verify that the course meets all BACB standards. Because otherwise, your training hours may be invalidated.

Here’s how to confirm a course’s legitimacy and avoid common pitfalls.

Official Verification Steps

  • Visit www.bacb.com and use the official provider search to confirm that the training source is recognized.
  • Ensure the course clearly states it meets the 2026 RBT training eligibility requirements.
  • A valid training provider will list their BACB Provider ID and expiration date. Double-check these details on the BACB site.
  • Instructor Credentials: Use the BACB Certificant Registry to verify that course instructors are credentialed BCBAs or BCaBAs in good standing.

Let’s check the documentation requirement after you’ve completed your RBT training:

  1. Your certificate of completion must include your name, the course title, training dates, total hours, and the provider’s name and BACB ID number.
  2. BACB does not accept transcripts in place of training certificates. Ensure you’re issued the proper documentation.
  3. Many legitimate programs offer digital certificates with authentication links or QR codes. Confirm the format is BACB-compliant.

All certificates and related materials must also include this exact disclaimer:
“This training program is designed to meet the 2026 training eligibility requirement for RBT certification. The training is offered independent of the BACB.”
