How Close Are These Mocks to the Real RBT Exam?
Pretty close, with a couple of honest differences. Here’s the side-by-side.
| Our five 75-question mocks | The real RBT exam | |
|---|---|---|
| Questions | 75 | 85: 75 scored and 10 unscored |
| Answer options | 4, one correct | 4, one correct |
| Time limit | None, set your own | 90 minutes, which also covers the terms and tutorial screens |
| Where | Online, whenever you like | In person at a Pearson VUE testing site |
| Content | All six areas of the Test Content Outline (3rd ed.) | Test Content Outline (3rd ed.) |
| When you finish | Your score, plus an explanation for every question | Pass or fail. A failing report lists the tasks you missed |
Ten of the real exam’s 85 questions are unscored pilot questions. Our advice? Answer every one as if it counts.
Pacing works out at about a minute a question (90 minutes for 85 questions, and that clock includes the start-up screens). For our 75-question mocks, a 90-minute timer is a gentle start. Want the real pace? Try 80 minutes.
Try Three Sample RBT Mock Exam Questions
Here are three questions straight from our mocks, one each from Behavior Acquisition, Behavior Reduction and Ethics. Those three areas make up 44 of the 75 scored questions. Have a go before you peek at the answer.
1. Behavior Acquisition (Task C.7)
The RBT is teaching a new sign language gesture. On day one, she physically moves the childās hands to make the sign (full prompt). On day two, she only touches the childās hands to start the movement (partial prompt). On day three, she just models the sign without touching, and the child imitates. This progression is an example of:
- A. Time-delay prompting
- B. Least-to-most prompt fading
- C. Most-to-least prompt fading
- D. No-no prompting
Answer: C. Most-to-least prompt fading
This sequence shows a clear reduction in prompt intrusiveness over time, progressing from full physical support to modeling, which defines a most-to-least fading approach.
From RBT Practice Test 5, question 23.
2. Behavior Reduction (Task D.3)
A toddler screams whenever she wants a toy, and her parents typically give it to her to stop the screaming. In a differential reinforcement of communication (DRC) approach, the parents should:
- A. Continue giving the toy during screams to avoid escalation.
- B. Give a toy on a fixed-time schedule, regardless of screaming.
- C. Teach the toddler to say or sign ātoyā (or āpleaseā) and only give the toy when she communicates appropriately, not when she screams.
- D. Remove all the toys so the child has nothing to scream for.
Answer: C. Teach the toddler to say or sign ātoyā (or āpleaseā) and only give the toy when she communicates appropriately, not when she screams.
This is a textbook scenario for functional communication training: teach and reinforce an appropriate request for the toy, and no longer give in to screaming. The child learns that asking gets the toy, whereas screaming does not. Option A would maintain the screaming behavior. Option B (NCR) is a different strategy that might reduce motivation but doesnāt teach a new skill. Option D is impractical and doesnāt teach the child how to request or cope.
From RBT Practice Test 5, question 53.
3. Ethics (Task F.8)
A clientās parents give the RBT an envelope containing a $100 gift card as a thank-you for their work. According to ethical guidelines, what should the RBT do?
- A. Accept the gift card and use it, as it does not directly affect therapy
- B. Politely thank them but decline the generous gift, explaining that accepting valuable gifts is against professional guidelines
- C. Accept it but then offer to share it with the whole therapy team
- D. Take the gift and promise the parents extra services in return
Answer: B. Politely thank them but decline the generous gift, explaining that accepting valuable gifts is against professional guidelines
RBTs should avoid accepting substantial gifts or anything of significant monetary value from clients or families, as this creates a conflict of interest. The professional approach is to express gratitude for the gesture but explain that ethics or company policy prevent acceptance of such gifts. Small tokens like a handmade card might be acceptable, but a $100 gift card is considered valuable and could compromise professional boundaries. The RBT should not feel obliged to provide special treatment in exchange for gifts.
Source: standard 1.11 of the RBT Ethics Code (2.0) caps gifts at a monetary value of $10.
From RBT Practice Test 3, question 74.
Got all three? Nice. Now see if it holds up over 75 questions.
What Your Mock Score Means
How the BACB Sets the Pass Mark
The real RBT exam is pass or fail. The BACB sets the passing score with the modified Angoff method: a panel of BACB-certified experts judges what an entry-level technician should know, and the BACB Board of Directors approves it.
Then there’s equating. People sit different forms of the exam, and the BACB adjusts scores for small differences in difficulty. That’s why the number of correct answers you need can change from form to form, and why the raw number isn’t reported. The BACB doesn’t publish a pass percentage; the passing score varies by exam form. Our guide to the RBT exam passing score goes deeper.
Our Rule of Thumb
Here’s the bar we use (our own rule, not a BACB number): score 80% or higher on at least two different full mocks before you book. On a 75-question mock, that’s 60 correct.
How Many People Pass
In 2025, 75% of the 109,341 first-time candidates passed the RBT exam. For retakes, it was 38% (BACB Examination Information). Harsh, but true: the odds drop sharply on a retake, so do the work before your first attempt.
You Don’t Pass Area by Area
Every question carries the same weight, and your result rests on your overall performance, not on each content area. If you fail, your report lists the RBT tasks where you missed questions.
So study the way that report works. When a mock question trips you up, note its area and task, then fix that task before exam day.
How to Use the Five Mocks
Think of Test 1 as a map, not a verdict. Here’s the order we suggest:
- Start untimed. Take RBT Practice Test 1 with no clock. Read the explanation for every miss and jot down its content area.
- Fix the weak spots. Work through the study guide and topic quiz for each area that keeps tripping you up (links below).
- Add the clock. Take Practice Test 2, Practice Test 3 and Practice Test 4 with a 90-minute timer, then tighten it to 80.
- Rehearse in one sitting. In the last few days, run one of the last-minute tests start to finish.
- Final check. Take Practice Test 5. Hit 80% here and on one other mock, and you’re in good shape to book.
This is our method, not a BACB rule. The BACB itself recommends preparing with the Test Content Outline (3rd ed.) and the materials from your 40-hour training and Competency Assessment, so use the mocks alongside those, not instead of them.
What Each Content Area Covers (3rd Edition)
The 75 scored questions come from six content areas in the RBT Test Content Outline (3rd ed.), which the exam uses from 2026. Using an older question set? We’ve put the old name in brackets.
- A. Data Collection and Graphing (13 questions, 17%) [Measurement]: continuous and discontinuous measurement, permanent product recording, graphing, calculating data and spotting trends. Study guide
- B. Behavior Assessment (8 questions, 11%) [Assessment]: preference assessments, skill assessments and your part in functional assessment. Study guide
- C. Behavior Acquisition (19 questions, 25%) [Skill Acquisition]: reinforcement, discrete-trial and naturalistic teaching, chaining, prompting and fading, generalization, shaping and token economies. Study guide
- D. Behavior Reduction (14 questions, 19%): functions of behavior, antecedent interventions, differential reinforcement, extinction, punishment, their side effects and crisis procedures. Study guide
- E. Documentation and Reporting (10 questions, 13%): passing concerns to your supervisor, asking for clinical direction, reporting things like illness or medication changes, and objective session notes. Study guide
- F. Ethics (11 questions, 15%) [Professional Conduct and Scope of Practice]: the RBT Ethics Code (2.0), competence, supervision, confidentiality, public statements, multiple relationships, gifts and cultural humility. Study guide
Each area has its own topic quiz in the cards at the bottom of this page.
Prefer Paper? Get the Printable PDF
Some people think better with a pencil in hand. Our free printable RBT practice test PDF has 75 questions, an answer sheet and an answer key that explains every answer. It’s weighted like the real exam’s 75 scored questions, and you don’t need to sign up to get it.
Is a Free Mock Up to Date? A Quick Check
Some free RBT question sets online were written for the old outline. Before you trust one, check it against this list:
- It uses the six 3rd-edition area names, from Data Collection and Graphing to Ethics.
- Each question has 4 options and one correct answer.
- It explains the answers, not just the score.
- It says its questions are original. The BACB only publishes a few retired sample questions, and it can’t endorse any study guide.
- It doesn’t promise a pass percentage. The BACB doesn’t publish a pass percentage; the passing score varies by exam form.
- It uses current rules, like the RBT Ethics Code (2.0) and supervision for at least 5% of your service hours each month, with at least two face-to-face contacts.
Spot old names like Measurement, Skill Acquisition or Professional Conduct? It was probably written before 2026. Our post on what changed in the 3rd edition walks you through the switch.
After the Mocks: Booking the Real RBT Exam

RBT Mock Exam FAQ
Are These Real RBT Exam Questions?
No. Every question is original, written to the BACB’s Test Content Outline (3rd ed.). The BACB doesn’t endorse any study material, ours included. Our official sample test has five retired questions the BACB published in an earlier (2021) handbook, and the current handbook includes a few more.
Are the Mocks Timed?
Our 85-question timed mock has a built-in 90-minute countdown. The five 75-question mocks and the last-minute tests don’t, so set your own: 90 minutes to start, then 80 for the real exam’s pace.
Is There a PDF With Answers?
Yes. The printable PDF has 75 questions and an answer key with an explanation for every answer.
Can I Retake a Mock?
Yes, as often as you like. Read the explanations between attempts, though, or you’ll end up memorizing answers rather than learning them.
Can I Take the Real RBT Exam Online?
No. The BACB delivers the RBT exam in person at authorized Pearson VUE testing sites.
What Score Do I Need on the Real Exam?
There’s no published percentage. The exam is pass or fail, and the raw number you need can vary by exam form. Our passing score guide explains why. Our own target is 80% on two full mocks.
Are 2025 Mock Exams Still Useful?
Only with care. The exam follows the Test Content Outline (3rd ed.) from 2026, so older sets may use the old area names and miss newer tasks. Read what changed in the 3rd edition first.
