What Score Do You Need to Pass the RBT Exam? (2026)

By Free RBT Practice Test Editorial Team | Updated October 2026

Want a number to aim for? Here’s the honest answer: the BACB doesn’t publish one. The RBT exam is pass/fail, and you won’t see a percentage on your result. So what does that actually mean for your studying? Let’s break it down.

The Short Answer

There’s no official passing percentage for the RBT exam. According to the RBT Handbook (updated June 2026), the exam is pass/fail, and you get your result at the testing center as soon as you finish.

If you see a site claiming “you need 80%” or a specific scaled score, treat it as a guess. It isn’t something the BACB has published.

How the Passing Score Is Set

The BACB uses something called the modified Angoff method. In plain English: a panel of BACB-certified subject matter experts sets the passing score, and the BACB Board of Directors approves it. The handbook says your result depends only on your understanding of entry-level behavior technician knowledge.

This is called a criterion-referenced exam. You’re measured against that standard, not against other people taking the test that day. No curve. No competing with the person at the next desk.

The handbook also says a new passing score is set when there’s a significant change to the exam, such as a new test content outline. The current exam follows the RBT Test Content Outline (3rd Edition).

Which Questions Actually Count

  • The exam has 85 multiple-choice questions and you get 90 minutes.
  • Only 75 questions are scored. The other 10 are unscored.
  • You can’t tell which questions are unscored, so treat every single one as if it counts.

What You See After the Exam

You’ll find out on the spot at the testing center whether you passed. The BACB can’t view or download your result report. To get a copy, log in to your Pearson VUE account and choose “View Score Reports”.

If you pass, the BACB emails you within one week about your certification. If you don’t, you can apply to retake it. You get up to 8 attempts within 12 months of your application approval, with at least 7 days between attempts. Here’s what retakes and rescheduling cost.

How Many People Pass?

According to the BACB’s examination data, 75% of first-time candidates passed in 2025, compared with 38% of people retaking it. That gap is the real lesson: it’s much easier to pass when you go in prepared the first time. Our guide to how hard the RBT exam is digs into those numbers.

So What Score Should You Aim For on Practice Tests?

Since there’s no official number, set your own safety margin. A sensible target is to score comfortably high on full-length practice tests, consistently, not just once. And look at which content areas you’re dropping points in, not just your total.

Try a free 75-question RBT practice test, or drill one area at a time with the topic quizzes. Every question comes with an explanation, so a wrong answer still teaches you something.

Final Thoughts

Don’t chase a magic percentage that doesn’t exist. Learn the content outline, practice under timed conditions, and fix your weakest area first. Do that, and the pass/fail result takes care of itself. You’ve got this!
