Autism diagnoses keep climbing. The CDC’s 2025 report found that about 1 in 31 eight-year-olds across its 16 U.S. monitoring sites had an autism diagnosis.
The number of Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) is also increasing rapidly.
As of July 1, 2026, the BACB counts 260,174 certified RBTs. That’s more than three times the number of BCBAs.
This means great job opportunities for you. But here’s a warning…
Picking the wrong 40-hour RBT training program can stop you from getting certified.
People often find a cheap online RBT training course, complete all 40 hours, and then discover their certificate isn’t BACB-compliant. Back to square one.
You don’t want that headache, and that’s why we’ve created this Registered Behavior Technician training guide.
In this blog, you’ll discover exactly which 40-hour RBT training providers meet 2026 BACB requirements, how to verify legitimate courses, and insider tips that help you pass the RBT exam on your first attempt.
Additionally, we’ll break down the real cost differences between various online RBT training options, some options cost far less than others for very similar content.
Let’s dive in.
40-Hour RBT Training Requirement Overview
To qualify for RBT certification under the 2026 BACB requirements, applicants must complete a 40-hour RBT training program that meets the following standards:
1. Curriculum Content
Training must follow the BACB’s RBT 2026 40-Hour Training Requirements and Curriculum Outline and prepare trainees for real-world ABA work under the supervision of a BCBA or BCaBA.
- A minimum of 38 hours must cover core content.
- 2 more hours can be added to any section.
- Topics can be taught in any order.
2. Timing & Duration
The 40-hour RBT training must be completed within a specific time frame:
- Minimum: 5 calendar days
- Maximum: 180 days
- Note: Reading assignments do not count toward the 40-hour total.
3. Delivery Format

You can choose 40-hour RBT training online, in-person, or hybrid, but it must include behavioral skills training components, such as:
- Role-playing with feedback
- Interactive discussions
- Quizzes and video modeling
- Reading alone does not qualify.

4. Trainer Qualifications

- Must be overseen by a BCaBA, BCBA, or BCBA-D who has completed 8-hour supervision training.
- Assistant Trainers (RBT or higher) may help but must not be related to, employed by, or supervised by the trainee.
- The Responsible Trainer must:
- Oversee and document all training.
- Be listed on all records.
- Retain training documents for 7 years.
5. Provider & Jurisdiction
Only individuals or organizations operating within the BACB jurisdiction are authorized to offer this training.
Training provided outside this jurisdiction will not be accepted. Refer to the RBT Handbook for the list of approved regions.
6. Audit & Compliance
BACB may audit any registered behavior technician training to verify compliance with timing, methods, trainer qualifications, and documentation.
RBT Documentation Requirements
The Responsible Trainer must keep records of each training for at least 7 years, for example:
- Time logs (start and end dates, and how long each trainee spent in training)
- Participation records (who attended, and who finished only part of the training)
- Names of the trainers and trainees
- Final certificates
If records don’t match up, the Responsible Trainer may be required to sign a sworn Noncompliance Affidavit listing the trainees whose training didn’t meet the requirements. Serious noncompliance may result in delayed certification of trainees or disciplinary action.
Popular Training Providers
The market offers many 40-hour RBT training providers, including online self-paced, live online, and in-person formats. The BACB does not formally accredit courses, but all must meet specific content and delivery requirements. Popular options for RBT training online include:

Online vs. In-Person RBT Training Options
Choosing between 40-hour RBT training online or in-person depends on your learning style and logistics:
Option 1: RBT Training Online
The online format offers flexibility, allowing you to complete coursework at your own pace.
- Pros: Flexibility to study anytime, accessible from anywhere, and often more affordable.
- Cons: Requires self-discipline, less real-time interaction, and limited hands-on practice.
In the section above, we’ve listed several online training providers. Visit their websites and select the option that best suits your needs.
Option 2: In-Person RBT Training:
This training takes place in a traditional classroom setting (e.g., school, college, or a dedicated training center.)
- Pros: Structured schedule, immediate instructor feedback, practical hands-on exercises.
- Cons: Less flexible timing, location-dependent, potentially higher costs.
For those who prefer structured environments and face-to-face learning, In-person training might be the best choice.
Search “RBT training near me” on Google, and you’ll find a bunch of different colleges, universities, or organizations.
RBT Course Content and Structure

The 40-hour RBT training follows a set structure from the BACB’s 2026 training outline. Each section has a minimum number of hours, and together they add up to 38. The last 2 hours? Your trainer can add them to any section. Each part of the training is designed to build on what you learned before.
A. Introduction to Applied Behavior Analysis (2 Hours)
- Establishes the scientific foundation of ABA principles, terminology, and evidence-based practice standards. This module introduces the three-term contingency, reinforcement schedules, and basic behavioral concepts that form the backbone of all subsequent training.
B. Preparing for Service Delivery (1 Hour)
- Focuses on pre-session preparation protocols, reviewing prior session notes, and environmental setup procedures. Trainees learn systematic approaches to session planning and the importance of consistent preparation routines.
C. Data Collection and Graphing (3 Hours)
- Covers measurement systems, data recording methods, and visual analysis techniques. This hands-on module emphasizes the importance of accuracy in data collection and the critical role of precise measurement in behavior change programs.
D. Assisting with Behavior Assessments (3 Hours)
- Teaches the RBT’s supportive role in assessment processes, including functional behavior assessment procedures and preference assessments. Trainees learn appropriate boundaries and collaboration techniques under the supervision of BCBAs.
E. Behavior-Change Interventions (20 Hours)
- The most comprehensive module covers skill acquisition programs, prompting strategies, reinforcement delivery, and behavior reduction techniques.
F. Service Delivery Documentation and Reporting (3 Hours)
- Covers the essentials of clear, accurate, and objective report writing. Learn how to professionally communicate with supervisors and team members, follow documentation standards, and maintain clarity in all work-related communication.
G. Ethics and Professionalism (5 Hours)
- Comprehensive coverage of the RBT Ethics Code, professional boundaries, confidentiality requirements, and workplace conduct standards.
H. Next Steps in the Certification Process (1 Hour)
- Practical guidance on exam registration, competency assessment preparation, and ongoing supervision requirements. Provides a clear roadmap for transitioning from training completion to active RBT practice.

How To Verify RBT Course Accreditation
Before committing to any 40-hour RBT training online or in-person, it’s critical to verify that the course meets all BACB standards. Because otherwise, your training hours may be invalidated.
Here’s how to confirm a course’s legitimacy and avoid common pitfalls.
Official Verification Steps
- Check the trainer’s BCBA or BCaBA certification on the BACB Certificant Registry. The BACB doesn’t approve or list 40-hour training providers.
- Ensure the course clearly states it meets the 2026 RBT training eligibility requirements.
- A valid training names its Responsible Trainer and their BCBA or BCaBA certification number, which you can look up on the BACB registry.
- Instructor Credentials: Use the BACB Certificant Registry to verify that course instructors are credentialed BCBAs or BCaBAs in good standing.
Let’s check the documentation requirement after you’ve completed your RBT training:
- Your certificate must show your name and BACB ID, the training start and end dates, the total time you spent, the Responsible Trainer’s name and certification number, and the statement that the training is designed to meet the 2026 training eligibility requirement.
- You’ll upload this certificate with your RBT application, so make sure your trainer gives you one.
- Trainers can design their own certificate, but it must be a single document that includes all of the details above.
All certificates and related materials must also include this exact disclaimer:
“This training program is designed to meet the 2026 training eligibility requirement for RBT certification. The training is offered independent of the BACB.”
Conclusion

Autism diagnoses are rising, and so is the demand for skilled Registered Behavior Technicians.
However, not every 40-hour RBT training program meets the strict BACB standards. Picking the wrong one can derail your certification.
